Looking Back....

Have you ever found yourself with a To Do List a mile long, a house full of closets that are overflowing with last year's pool toys and wrapping paper scraps, a laundry room that’s so cluttered with clothes that you couldn’t get to the washer if you tried, a myriad of kitchen cabinets laced with forgotten grocery lists and various "necessary" trinkets, a purse whose only purpose is to serve as a receptacle for dropped cheerios and poorly written notes jotted on gum wrappers , and a home that's so dirty even a dung beetle would pass it up? Not to mention, a mirror reflecting that frumpy, unhappy, disorganized woman you SWORE you would NEVER become?
Well, friends, I was that woman just a few years ago. (What am I saying??? I was that woman just a few MINUTES ago!!!!)
Growing up with a perfectionist mother made me want to rebel entirely too much. Now it's not like I went off the deep end and did a bunch of drugs or sowed my wild oats or anything. But keeping a dirty room was my way of “expressing” myself. I mean, trudging through knee deep clothes and half eaten snickers is cool, right? And of course, I SWORE I could find anything.... that there really was a method to my madness..... that under the shroud of disorganization was really a tried and true organizational system of genius proportions. I would defend my stance to the death, much to the chagrin of my poor mother.
Really and truly, though, I knew deep down that being orderly would bring some measure of peace to my life.... It would be so easy to stop procrastinating by studying a mere 30 minutes a night.... If I actually hung my clothes up instead of piling them in a heap on the floor, I might actually find that perfect outfit and not have to go through hoops (and all 72 dryer sheets) to make it smell halfway fresh…. I could keep up with all of my art supplies, avoiding the regular ritual of "just buying another" (and, btw, college art supplies make EXPENSIVE doubles.)
But, unfortunately, I refused to see the light. Maybe it was just the headphones, but I was deaf to all pleas towards a less messy lifestyle , and was convinced that me and my disorganization made a perfect couple.
But one day….. one event, rather, changed my viewpoint forever.
I met a man.
I met a neat man. (Neat as in tidy, not as in cool..... although he was that too.)
I got married.
I married a neat man.
I married a neat man whose father was a career military Army Sergeant.
I married a man who was yelled at if his room wasn't dusted daily.
I married a man who was practically flogged for leaving a t-shirt on the bed.... heaven forbid he leave it on the floor!!!! *gasps*
I married a man whose parents had had the exact same WHITE carpet for 12 years.
It is still spotless to this day.
I married a man who would sit on the couch and convulse if I would not let him clean the two dirty dishes in our kitchen sink. (No kidding….I practically had to sit on him to hold him down.)
Suddenly, I realized that my blissful, lifelong rendezvous with messiness was about to come to a screeching halt. I could either live peacefully with my disorganization, or peacefully with my husband. And since divorce was too expensive, the disorganization got jilted. If I wanted my marriage to work—not just work, but run like a well oiled machine—I was going to have to make some drastic changes. Not just out of respect for my husband, but out of respect for myself.
Thus began my four year journey to an organized lifestyle -- a simpler lifestyle at that. Do I have all the answers? No. Am I the perfect little housewife who vacuums in her heels and puts June Cleaver to shame? No. Do I wake up every morning and struggle to maintain what bit of order that has been created over the last four years? ABSOLUTELY.
Throughout the next few days, months, and even years, I hope to be able to help women just like myself, become more organized, peaceful, simple individuals.
Keep checking back, y’all, because there are more nuggets of goodness to come!
